Study in the city

St. Hilda’s is the sister programme to St. Michael’s with the advantage of accepting slightly younger students, and offering a smaller, more intimate campus setting within the extensive University of Toronto complex. Located in the heart of Toronto, this programme combines 20 hours of ESL training with a varied excursion package showcasing the best that Toronto has to offer. Conveniently located close to the subway and within walking distance of major downtown attractions, St. Hilda’s is truly a home away from home.

Location

The City of Toronto, located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, is the largest of Canada’s urban centres. It is the hub of the nation’s commercial, financial, industrial and cultural life. It is also the capital city of Ontario. St. Hilda’s operates on the grounds of Trinity College, a college within the University of Toronto’s downtown campus.

Supervision

• Staff live with students on the same residence floors, ensuring adult supervision
• Evening and night patrol is conducted by staff

Sign-out Privileges

Students aged 14 - 16 years
Students aged 14 years or older are permitted to leave campus with another student during leisure time provided they adhere to the following policy:

• before departing the student(s) must sign-out with a staff member
• upon return they must report back to staff
• timelines must be respected or else the students may have this privilege revoked
• staff are always available to accompany students upon request. Parents may request this in advance of arrival.

Students aged 12 - 13 years
Students younger than 14 years may request to be
accompanied off-campus by a staff or group leader
during leisure time.

 

Language Programme

The language programme goal is to make students confident communicators in English, regardless of their level. This programme develops and enhances speaking and listening skills in addition to reading and writing. Students draw from group activities and individual experiences to expand their language proficiency. Classroom learning is complemented by afternoon language-based visits to local cultural attractions

Our instructors

• Have TESL or teaching certification
• Use modern communicative and task-oriented methodologies including the use of audio-visual equipment and role-playing
• Follow the CISS language skills curriculum - designed to be challenging yet fun and relevant for teen-aged students.

English Instruction

• 20 hours of ESL instruction per week

- 18 hours of classroom instruction
- 2 hours of language-directed workshops*

• 1 hour = 60 minutes
• Plus 15 minute break
• 4 levels of ESL (Beg / L-Int / H-Int / Adv)
• Small classes (15 students maximum)
• Placement testing on first full day of programme

* Language-directed workshops are English-applied activities. Students attend workshops based on their language level. Workshops will vary and may include:

• specific skills practice (ie. pronunciation)
• scavenger hunts where students must use specific language to gain information
• interactive and language-focused games
